We’d run the boat at fairly high speed and head off towards the deep sea fishing grounds off the ledge of the back-side of the island of Lānaʻi. Then we’d put the lures in the water and troll along the ledge for Marlin, Mahimahi, or Ono (Wahoo). Almost always as we headed for the grounds or as we returned to Maui, a pod of dolphins would tag along. It was obvious that they loved playing in the wake of the boat and in their highly socialized world, their joy and exuberance were on full display as they frolicked in the wake and then jumped out of the water on either side of the boat. The Dolphins seemed to have a perpetual smile when they were playing! My song “Blue Water Dolphin” is a musical description of those happy days. Drinking a cold beer and cruising the warm swells of the Pacific with the Dolphins happy and free. What a great feeling!
