This is my tribute to the region of Maui where I used to play music in the evenings. Kapalua Bay reflects the colors of sunset over the water and its a really beautiful part of our island.
There are generally two classes of tunings in for the slack key guitar. The first is the “kāne” or male tunings. The most popular slack key tuning, taro patch (DGDGBD), is a kāne tuning. These tunings have strong, clear voicing and to the Hawaiian ear are very male. Whereas the second class of tunings, the “wahine” are female and are a bit more mysterious and emotionally complex. In my C Wahine Tuning the major 7th note is the 2nd string B note and the feel of the tuning leads to some very interesting audio space.
After you have finished this piece, go on to Wai Ulu.
